Police investigate death of Gauhati University student at Guwahati-area homestay

Bharatmorning.com – A 22-year-old student of Gauhati University was found dead after spending Friday night at a homestay on the outskirts of Guwahati, prompting allegations of rape and murder from her family and an ongoing police investigation.

The student had gone to the property with a male friend on Friday. She was taken unconscious to a nearby health facility during the early hours of Saturday, before being referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Doctors at GMCH declared her dead.

Police have arrested the man, who is suspected to have been the student’s boyfriend. Guwahati West deputy commissioner of police Bolin Deori said investigators have also detained other people for questioning as they examine the circumstances leading to her death.

Family alleges torture during late-night call

The woman’s family said she phoned her mother at around 2am and said she was being tortured. They said the call was cut off shortly afterward and that her phone was subsequently switched off.

Her father alleged that the student had been assaulted and said he believes more than one person was involved. He demanded a full inquiry into the death and alleged that his daughter had been gang-raped and murdered.

“She told her mother that they were torturing her, that they would kill her, and asked her to save her. She said that the boyfriend kicked her in the chest. Soon after, her phone was switched off. Later, we saw her at the hospital when she was already dead,” the father said.

He said he saw injuries on several parts of her body, including her lips and private parts, and maintained that the harm could not have been caused by a single person.

“From her lips to other parts of her body and even her private parts, there were injuries. One person cannot do this. I am sure there were multiple men who raped and murdered her. We demand a proper investigation,” he said.

The father also called for those found responsible to face punishment. He spoke of the grief of taking his daughter’s body for cremation and said the family wanted justice for her death.

“I carried my daughter’s body to the cremation ground. She was only 22. I want her murderers to face the same,” he said.

Post-mortem expected to clarify cause of death

Deori said the body was sent to GMCH for a post-mortem examination, which is expected to provide important medical findings on the cause of death. While police have found multiple injuries, they said they did not see blood on the student’s body or on the floor of the homestay during their visit.

“As per the preliminary inquiry, this was a murder and the prime accused has been arrested. We are investigating the matter further and have detained some others for questioning,” Deori said on Sunday.

He said the precise cause of death had not yet been established. Police were alerted after the local health facility received the unconscious student and responded soon afterward.

Investigators have not confirmed the family’s allegation of gang rape. The post-mortem findings and further examination of evidence will be central to determining whether additional offences are made out and whether more people were involved.

Cases involving an unexplained death, allegations of assault and possible sexual violence require investigators to establish a clear sequence of events through medical evidence, witness accounts and forensic examination. The inquiry is therefore likely to focus on what happened at the homestay, who was present, when the student became unwell, and how she was transported for medical care.

Accused man’s family seeks justice

Relatives of the arrested man said the student and the accused had been in a relationship for several months. They said the family knew of the relationship and that the student had visited their home during Eid this year. They also said she had expressed willingness to marry him.

The accused’s mother said she had spoken with the student during that visit and had raised the difference in their religions. She said the student knew that her boyfriend was Muslim.

“I told her, ‘Maa (daughter), you are an educated girl and my son is also educated. My son is a Muslim and you are a Hindu. I hope you understand what I am trying to say.’”

She said her son received a phone call on Friday evening and left home without explaining where he was going.

“When I asked him where he was going, he said nothing and left. Now we see that he has been accused of killing her,” she said.

The accused’s mother said she wanted justice for the dead student and that punishment should follow if her son is found guilty.

“If he is guilty, he should be punished. I have heard that the girl called her mother that night and told her that she was being tortured. I want justice for her.”

The investigation remains underway, with the post-mortem report expected to be a key part of establishing the facts behind the student’s death.
