GMDA begins trials of 18-km water pipeline to boost city supply

Bharatmorning.com – The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has initiated test operations for an 18-kilometer master water pipeline that stretches from the Chandu Budhera water treatment plant to a newly built Sector-72 water boosting station. This project aims to enhance water distribution across residential neighborhoods along Golf Course Road and Golf Course Extension Road, according to officials. The pipeline, which was previously laid by the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikran (HSVP) in 2012, has faced delays due to modifications in the alignment of Dwarka Expressway and gaps in the network that hindered its functionality. Recent efforts by GMDA have successfully resolved these missing segments by installing the pipeline beneath the expressway, allowing the system to now be tested comprehensively.
As of the past week, the trial phase has commenced, with officials reporting that approximately 10 kilometers of the pipeline up to Dwarka Expressway has already undergone inspection. During these initial evaluations, a few leaks were detected, prompting immediate repairs to ensure the pipeline meets operational standards. The GMDA has emphasized that these trials are critical for verifying the infrastructure’s reliability before full-scale activation, which is expected to significantly improve water availability for communities in the affected zones.
Abhinav Verma, the executive engineer at GMDA, outlined the progress of the testing process during a recent statement. He noted that the section of the pipeline extending from the Chandu Budhera treatment plant to Elan Mall in Sector-84 has been fully examined. “During our assessment, two leaks were identified near Sector-88 and have been successfully sealed,” Verma explained. He further added that a service road in Sector-88 was damaged during the process but has since been restored. The next phase of testing will focus on the pipeline’s segment under the CPR (Common Pipe Road), NH 48, and beyond, as well as the distribution network originating from the Sector-72 boosting station.
“Once the trials conclude by the end of June, the pipeline will be declared operational next month. This will directly benefit sectors 58 to 80, which are currently reliant on the tail-end of the water supply network,” Verma stated. He highlighted that these areas often experience water shortages due to the limitations of the existing infrastructure, and the new pipeline will serve as a vital link to alleviate the strain on the system.
Officials from GMDA also mentioned that the newly established Sector-72 boosting station is designed to reduce the workload on the Sector-51 boosting station, ensuring more stable and consistent water flow to sectors 51 through 57. This strategic shift is expected to optimize the overall distribution network, preventing bottlenecks that have plagued the region for years. The station will act as a supplementary source, allowing for better pressure management and more efficient delivery to residential areas.
