Who Is Nila Vikhe Patil? Sweden MP’s Journey

Bharatmorning.com – Who is Nila Vikhe Patil? She is a Green Party politician of Indian origin who has been elected to Sweden’s 349-member Parliament, the Riksdag, from the Stockholm City constituency. Her election follows a long involvement in Swedish public life, spanning party work, government advisory roles and local politics.

The 41-year-old won her seat in Sweden’s national election held on September 13. She has been active in Swedish politics for about 25 years, including through Green Party organisations, youth groups and elected positions in Stockholm.

After her election, Patil said she was looking forward to contributing to both Stockholm and Sweden. She has also highlighted the importance of representing people who cannot vote and helping create better prospects for children.

“It feels nice to be a part of the 349-member Parliament. I am looking forward to contributing to the city and the country.”

Her priorities in the Swedish Parliament

Nila Vikhe Patil has linked her political priorities to children’s futures and environmental protection. She has spoken about the need for clean water, thriving nature and a planet with fewer human-caused natural disasters.

“I would like to be voice for those who cannot vote. I want to contribute to a society where every child gets a chance for a good future. We need a habitable planet with clean water, living nature and as few human-caused natural disasters as possible.”

Her election comes after a closely contested result in the 349-seat Riksdag. The Social Democrats, Left Party, Centre Party and Green Party together secured 176 seats, while the four parties that formed or supported the outgoing conservative-led government won 173 seats. The Social Democrats were the largest single party with 99 seats.

Maharashtra family connections

Her grandfather was former Union minister Balasaheb Vikhe Patil, while her great-grandfather, Vithalrao Vikhe Patil, is credited with founding Asia’s first cooperative sugar factory.

Asked about the family influence behind her public career, Nila Vikhe Patil recalled that her grandfather encouraged her interest in government finances from an early age.

“I hope to make my grandfather proud. He made me read the state budget when I was 15.”

She has also described a strong emotional connection with India, where she retains close friendships and memories of regular conversations with her grandfather in his later years.

Education and career before the Riksdag
