Pakistan-China 5th gen fighter jet collaboration a concern, but we possess necessary capabilities: IAF Chief
IAF Chief Says Pakistan-China 5th-Gen Fighter Plan Is a Concern
Bharatmorning.com – The possibility of a Pakistan China 5th gen fighter collaboration is a strategic concern for India, but the Indian Air Force has the capabilities needed to address it, Air Chief Marshal A. P. Singh has said. He stressed that the challenge must be watched closely without assuming it would create an unmanageable situation.
Speaking ahead of Air Force Day, the IAF chief said reports of Pakistan potentially acquiring advanced Chinese fighter aircraft underline the urgency of India’s own next-generation combat plans. He also referred to indications that Pakistani pilots may be receiving training in China.
“Undoubtedly, this is a cause for concern. However, is it a no-go situation? I wouldn’t agree with that.”
Capability depends on more than a fighter jet
Air Chief Marshal Singh said the impact of a Pakistan China 5th gen fighter acquisition would depend on much more than the aircraft itself. Modern combat effectiveness relies on how well fighters are linked with radar coverage, command-and-control systems, intelligence assets, electronic warfare tools, weapons and other platforms.
In that context, India’s response will depend on the integration of its own aircraft and systems. A technologically advanced jet alone does not guarantee an operational advantage if the wider military network supporting it is not equally effective.
The IAF chief noted that Pakistan has operated other advanced platforms in the past but said they had not delivered significant results during Operation Sindoor. He said India must ensure that every new aircraft and capability is incorporated effectively into its larger operational framework.
“Pakistan has possessed other platforms in the past, yet they haven’t been able to achieve anything significant with them during Operation Sindoor.”
India should be able to manage the emerging situation in the near term, Singh said, particularly if it continues to strengthen its integrated air-power capabilities before Pakistan can fully operationalise any fifth-generation aircraft.
AMCA progress and fighter fleet requirements
The Pakistan China 5th gen fighter issue has renewed attention on India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, or AMCA, programme. The indigenous project is intended to provide India with a fifth-generation fighter suited to future air-combat requirements.
Singh said India must move quickly to induct an aircraft from this generation. He added that alternatives may need to be considered if the AMCA programme faces delays, reflecting the IAF’s need to prevent gaps in its long-term combat fleet.
“We must prioritise the early induction of an aircraft of this generation. We need to push the AMCA program forward; if there are delays, we must make alternative decisions.”
The IAF also needs to induct roughly 36 to 40 aircraft annually for the next several years to address declining squadron strength, he said. That effort involves more than buying jets: pilot training, maintenance, infrastructure, weapons and operational readiness must all keep pace.
MRFA, Rafale and Su-57 options
Singh said the IAF aims to conclude its proposed multi-role fighter aircraft, or MRFA, acquisition during the current financial year if the process remains on schedule. The programme is expected to play a major role in sustaining the force’s combat capability.
The government had cleared a proposal to acquire 114 Rafale fighter jets from France through a government-to-government arrangement, with negotiations over price and other terms continuing. Russia has also offered the Su-57 fighter aircraft to India.
These choices form part of the broader planning around the Pakistan China 5th gen fighter challenge, squadron shortages and the need to modernise India’s air force while domestic programmes develop.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the Pakistan China 5th gen fighter plan important for India?
Fifth-generation fighters can offer advanced features such as lower observability and improved sensors. The IAF chief has said their actual military value will still depend on training, weapons, command systems and integration with other military assets.
What is India’s AMCA programme?
The AMCA is India’s planned indigenous fifth-generation fighter aircraft programme. The IAF sees faster progress on the project as important for meeting future air-power requirements.
How can India respond to a Pakistan China 5th gen fighter development?
According to the IAF chief, India’s response rests on integrating aircraft, surveillance, intelligence, communications and other capabilities effectively, while continuing fighter induction and modernisation plans.
