He did not return home. Days later, police arrested two former colleagues in connection with his death after his body was found in a Gurugram drain.
The case has also raised painful questions for Manchanda’s family, who say they were not told when an unidentified body was recovered on September 10 or when it was cremated four days later. They say they learned that the body had been found only while Delhi Police were investigating his disappearance.
Police have linked the alleged killing to a financial dispute involving crores of rupees. Investigators are examining the dealings between Manchanda and former colleague Anya Vats, as well as the events that led to his death.
Wedding preparations interrupted
Manchanda had gone wedding shopping in Lajpat with his family on September 6. His sister, Karishma, said he left after selecting his wedding outfit, explaining that he had to meet a former woman colleague. His wedding was scheduled for roughly a month later.
He had informed both his fiancée and his employer about the planned meeting, Karishma said. The family last spoke with him at about 7.30 pm that evening.
“He had gone to Lajpat with us for wedding shopping. His wedding was to take place in a month. After finalising his sherwani, he left, saying he had a meeting with a former woman colleague.”
At first, messages from Manchanda suggested that he was safe. He told relatives not to be concerned and warned that his phone could be switched off. He later said he would be back on Saturday, then changed the expected return date to Thursday.
The assurances soon gave way to alarm. Karishma said relatives urged him to call or appear on video, but he did neither.
“Then my sister requested him to at least show his face. She asked why he was not calling or coming home.”
His absence was especially distressing because Manchanda had long carried substantial responsibility within the family. Relatives said his father has partial paralysis and his mother is frequently unwell. Childhood friend Rajat Jain described him as someone who had taken care of his household from an early age.
“Since he was young, he had taken responsibility for his home.”
Jain said he had known Manchanda and his family since childhood, and that Manchanda had recently attended Jain’s younger brother’s wedding.
Investigation leads to former colleagues
After waiting for Manchanda to return, his family approached police on September 11, five days after he went missing. The inquiry eventually centred on Vats, who had the last known telephone conversation with him, and her husband, Sanyam Sachdeva.
Police detained Vats and Sachdeva in Uttarakhand, where they were staying in a paying-guest accommodation. Technical surveillance pointed investigators to Vats’s location there. During questioning, the two allegedly told police that Manchanda had been killed and that his body was disposed of in a drain near their Gurugram residence.
Investigators say the couple allegedly moved around in a vehicle and later parked it inside their residential society while the body remained in the car before taking it to the drain.
Manchanda, Vats and Sachdeva had earlier worked at the same real-estate company. Vats had been dismissed from that company over alleged financial irregularities. Police say she later worked independently and assisted Manchanda on certain real-estate transactions.
The exact nature of those financial arrangements remains under examination. An initial review of the accused pair’s finances indicated that they appeared to maintain an expensive lifestyle despite limited funds, police said.
Questions over final movements and cause of death
Police sources say Manchanda was allegedly asked to park his own vehicle before entering Vats’s SUV. He was allegedly seated in the front passenger seat, with Vats behind him and Sachdeva at the wheel.
Officials have not publicly detailed how Manchanda was killed. The cause of death and other forensic findings are expected to be clarified through the post-mortem report being obtained from Gurugram Police.
The body recovered on September 10 had been found in a drain within the Badshahpur police station area. At that point, it was unidentified.
For the family, the period between the recovery and cremation has become a central concern. Karishma said they were later told that the remains were badly decomposed, were kept for three days and were cremated on September 14.
“I requested them to give me something of his that I could take to my mother. They gave us nothing. He was wearing a ring and a watch also, but we got nothing.”
The family has also challenged an initial suggestion that Manchanda may have died by drowning. They are awaiting clearer forensic conclusions as investigators continue to examine the alleged murder, the suspected financial dispute and the handling of the unidentified body.
The case brings together several unresolved issues: the communications sent after Manchanda disappeared, the alleged movement of the vehicle, the financial relationship under scrutiny, and the family’s contention that they were not alerted before the cremation. The post-mortem findings will be important in establishing the medical evidence surrounding his death.
