Kanpur man objects to youths urinating on road, bludgeoned to death
Shopkeeper Dies After Alleged Assault Near Kanpur’s Om Crossing
Bharatmorning.com – A 47-year-old shopkeeper died after an alleged assault in Kanpur’s Kakadeo area, following a dispute late on Saturday night near Om Crossing. Police are examining CCTV footage that appears to show four or five men attacking the victim, including repeated blows to his head with a brick.
The victim, Amit Kumar, lived in Naveen Nagar and operated Prem Aid, a shop in Kakadeo. He was on his way home after shutting his business for the day when the confrontation took place at about 11 pm.
Objection Leads to Argument
Amit’s family said a group of youths had gathered near the crossing after drinking alcohol. One youth allegedly began urinating in the road, prompting Amit to object. The exchange quickly escalated into an argument, after which the group allegedly encircled him.
Family members said the youths abused Amit before attacking him. They have alleged that other people who tried to step in were also assaulted. The attackers allegedly left the location after the incident and threatened people nearby.
Residents alerted police through the 112 emergency service and informed Amit’s family. He was first taken to a private hospital in the area before being referred to Anurag Hospital for further treatment.
Critical Head Injuries
Amit suffered severe injuries to his head during the assault. He remained under medical care for two days but died at Anurag Hospital on Monday night.
His son, Rudra Pratap Singh, told police that the dispute began after Amit protested against the youth urinating on the road. The family has maintained that the injuries sustained in the attack caused his death and has sought swift action against everyone involved.
On Tuesday, relatives went to the post-mortem house and demanded strict measures against the accused. Their demand for early arrests reflects the seriousness of the allegations and the concern within the family over the fatal violence.
CCTV Footage Becomes Key to Investigation
DCP Central Atul Srivastava said the family initially did not agree to a post-mortem examination after Amit’s death. They later asked police to review CCTV material, as they had raised the possibility that an accident might have led to the death.
The footage reviewed by investigators instead indicated an assault at the spot where the incident occurred.
“While checking the CCTV footage of the place where the incident had taken place, we found that four to five people were beating Amit,” Srivastava said.
Srivastava said police had questioned roughly a dozen people during the investigation. Four names had emerged at that stage, providing investigators with possible leads in identifying and locating those allegedly involved.
The presence of surveillance footage is expected to be central to establishing the sequence of events, the number of people present and the role played by each person. Investigators will also need to assess witness accounts, medical findings and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
Case Registered in Kakadeo
SHO Kakadeo Dharmendra Ram said a case had been registered following a complaint submitted by Amit’s family. The registration of the case begins the formal criminal investigation into the allegations surrounding the attack.
The episode has drawn attention to how an argument in a public place can turn grave within minutes. Amit had been returning from work, and the dispute allegedly began over conduct on a road near a busy crossing. The subsequent allegation of a group assault has made the case especially serious for his relatives and local residents.
For the family, the immediate focus remains accountability for Amit’s death. Their insistence on action follows the review of the CCTV footage and the confirmation that police are questioning people linked to the incident.
Further investigation will determine the identities of all those involved, whether additional suspects are identified and what charges ultimately arise from the evidence collected by police.
