Eight BJP, two SP candidates from Uttar Pradesh elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha
All 10 Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha Candidates Win Without Contest
Bharatmorning.com – Uttar Pradesh will send 10 members to the Rajya Sabha without a vote after all nominees in the biennial election were declared elected unopposed on Friday. The successful group includes eight Bharatiya Janata Party candidates and two nominees of the Samajwadi Party.
The outcome followed the close of the nomination-withdrawal period on October 9, leaving no contested seat in the election for the Upper House. Returning officer Ajit Kumar Verma confirmed that each candidate remaining in the field had been elected.
“All the 10 candidates, who were in the fray for the Rajya Sabha, have been declared elected. Friday (October 9) was the last date for the withdrawal of nominations.”
BJP Secures Eight Seats, SP Retains Two
The BJP’s elected candidates are Dharampal Singh, Radhakant Ojha, Prakash Pal, Vidyasagar Sonkar, Gopi Krishna Pandey, Priyanka Singh Rawat, Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan and Shruti Gangwar.
The Samajwadi Party candidates elected to the Rajya Sabha are Ram Gopal Yadav and Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani. Their election means the party will continue to have representation among the members chosen from Uttar Pradesh, even as the BJP takes the larger share of the available seats.
Rajya Sabha elections are held through members of state legislative assemblies, but an election is unnecessary when the number of candidates does not exceed the number of vacancies. In this case, the withdrawal process cleared the way for all 10 nominees to be returned without polling.
Verma said that certificates of election had been collected by most of the successful candidates or their representatives. Nathwani had not yet received his certificate, while representatives collected documents for Ram Gopal Yadav and Radhakant Ojha.
“Except Samajwadi Party candidate Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani, the rest have collected their certificates. Representatives of Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav and BJP candidate Radhakant Ojha have collected the certificates on their behalf.”
Nathwani is expected to collect his certificate on October 12.
Adityanath Extends Congratulations
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated the BJP nominees in a Hindi post on X, describing their unopposed election as an important moment in the 2026 Rajya Sabha biennial polls.
“Heartiest congratulations to all BJP candidates from Uttar Pradesh for being elected unopposed in the Rajya Sabha biennial elections-2026.”
Adityanath said he expected the new members to contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Viksit Bharat,” support national development and uphold the standing of the Rajya Sabha.
“I have full confidence that you all will make a significant contribution in realising the resolve of our Prime Minister @narendramodi ji for ‘Viksit Bharat’ and in giving new momentum to the nation’s progress. At the same time, you will enhance the dignity of the Upper House. Best wishes for your all’s bright tenure.”
The Rajya Sabha, Parliament’s Upper House, represents states and Union territories. Its members do not face dissolution with the Lok Sabha, and vacancies arise in a rotating cycle as sitting members complete their terms. The latest Uttar Pradesh election was required because the tenure of 10 members from the state ends on November 25.
Dharampal Singh Pays Tribute to Kalyan Singh
Among the BJP’s new Rajya Sabha members is Uttar Pradesh minister Dharampal Singh, an Other Backward Classes leader from the Lodh community. After receiving his election certificate, he dedicated the achievement to former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh, his late political mentor and a leader from the same community.
Dharampal Singh later paid respects at Kalyan Singh’s statue opposite the municipal corporation office, linking his elevation to the political legacy of the former chief minister.
The members due to retire from Uttar Pradesh include Union ministers Hardeep Singh Puri and BL Verma. Other outgoing BJP members are Arun Singh, Geeta Shakya, Neeraj Shekhar, Brijlal and Seema Dwivedi. Ram Gopal Yadav is among the retiring Samajwadi Party members, while Ramji Gautam is retiring from the Bahujan Samaj Party.
One of the seats had become vacant before the normal completion of its term. Former Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma resigned from the Rajya Sabha on September 11 after being appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Assembly Election Focus Emerges
There had been speculation that the Samajwadi Party could nominate a third candidate, potentially creating a contest for the final seat. That possibility ended on Tuesday, the final day for filing nominations, when party chief Akhilesh Yadav indicated that his party’s attention had moved beyond the Rajya Sabha arithmetic.
“Now, our focus is not on three, but on 403.”
The reference was to the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly, where state elections are scheduled in early 2027. With the Rajya Sabha contest now settled without voting, the comment underlined the growing political focus on the next Assembly battle in India’s most populous state.
