37-yr-old drug smuggler held, 2 booked after shootout in Sec 62
Three Held After Late-Night Gunfight in Gurugram’s Sector 62
Bharatmorning.com – Three men accused in interstate drug-smuggling cases were taken into custody after a late-night exchange of gunfire with a Crime Branch team near Sector 62 in Gurugram. Two of the suspects suffered gunshot wounds to their legs, while a police officer was injured in the arm during the confrontation.
The incident took place on Friday night after the Sector-65 Crime Branch received information that three armed men were allegedly preparing to commit a robbery. Police set up a checkpoint on the Nangli Umarpur–Sector 62 road in response to the alert.
The suspects have been identified as Marfat alias Maru, 32, and Phool Babu Sheikh, 26, both residents of Bali Murshidabad, along with Shrikul Sheikh, 37, who is from Nadia in West Bengal. Shrikul was apprehended at the scene after a chase, while the other two were injured in retaliatory police firing.
Checkpoint Operation Escalates Into Shootout
The three men reached the checkpoint at around 11pm. Instead of stopping, they allegedly opened fire on the police team and attempted to escape. Officers pursued them and stopped them nearly a kilometre away, where gunfire broke out again.
“Acting on the tip-off, the team set up a checkpoint on the road from Nangli Umarpur to Sector-62. The trio arrived at the spot around 11pm, but fled after opening fire on the police team,” said Sandeep Turan, public relations officer of Gurugram police.
During the second encounter, one bullet struck a police vehicle and another hit a Crime Branch officer in the arm. Marfat and Phool were hurt when police returned fire. Officers said the suspects discharged six rounds, while the police fired three.
“Police chased and intercepted the suspects almost a kilometre later, where the suspects fired at the police again. One of the bullets hit a police vehicle and another injured an officer,” Turan said.
The two injured suspects are to be formally arrested once doctors declare them medically fit. Their treatment and medical assessment are part of the immediate procedure following the encounter.
Drugs, Weapons and Motorcycle Recovered
Police recovered 136 grams of MDMA from the men, along with a pistol, a country-made firearm, an empty cartridge and a motorcycle. The seizure has widened the scope of the investigation beyond the alleged robbery plan, as investigators examine the suspected narcotics network and the role each accused may have played.
MDMA is a controlled psychotropic substance, and its alleged recovery has brought provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act into the case. Investigators will also examine the firearms recovered during the operation under the relevant provisions of the Arms Act.
Phool was already wanted in a drug-smuggling matter, and Gurugram police had announced a reward for information leading to his arrest. Police records also show previous cases involving all three accused.
Marfat has four cases registered against him, including allegations related to assault, theft, counterfeit currency and drug smuggling. Phool has two cases registered against him, while Shrikul faces one earlier drug-smuggling case.
Case Registered at Sector-65 Police Station
On the complaint of a Crime Branch official, an FIR was registered on Saturday at Sector-65 police station. The case includes allegations of attempt to murder as well as provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Arms Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
The allegations will now be examined through the recovery of weapons and narcotics, statements from police personnel, medical records of those injured, forensic examination of the firearms and vehicle-related evidence. The empty cartridge recovered from the scene may also form part of the ballistic investigation.
The encounter highlights the risks faced by police teams during operations involving armed suspects. It also underlines the importance of road checkpoints and rapid coordination when officers receive intelligence about possible criminal activity. In this case, the operation moved quickly from surveillance and interception to a chase after the suspects allegedly fired at the team.
For residents in the area, the episode is a reminder that emergency police activity can unfold suddenly on connecting roads around Sector 62 and Nangli Umarpur. Motorists encountering police barricades or an active operation should keep a safe distance, follow instructions from officers and avoid obstructing emergency movement.
Further action against the accused will depend on their medical fitness, the investigation into the alleged narcotics supply chain and the evidence collected from the scene. The three men remain at the centre of an investigation involving both armed resistance and suspected drug smuggling.
