Cal State Fullerton freshman dies after off-campus fraternity gathering

He was taken to the emergency department at St. Jude Medical Center shortly after midnight on Saturday, September 12. Police said the young man was unresponsive when he arrived at the hospital. Medical staff attempted life-saving treatment, but he was later pronounced dead.
Alcohol examined as possible contributing factor
The Orange County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has not yet released an official cause or manner of death. Fullerton Police have said their preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol consumption may have contributed to Blas’ death.
“Based on the preliminary investigation, alcohol consumption appears to have been a contributing factor in the male’s death. However, the official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office.”
The department said the investigation remains open. Detectives have not identified hazing as a factor, and police said there was no indication of foul play at this stage of the case.
“At this time, hazing is not considered to be a factor, and there is no evidence to suggest foul play. This investigation remains active and ongoing.”
Investigators focus on area near campus
Police placed the incident in the vicinity of Associated Road and Milton Avenue. Detectives also went to the 2100 block of Teri Place, a neighborhood near the Cal State Fullerton campus where several off-campus fraternity houses are located. Residents have referred to the area as “frat row.”
The fraternities involved in that area are not affiliated with Cal State Fullerton and operate away from university property. Police said Blas was a student at the university who had attended a function held by an unaffiliated fraternity.
“The incident occurred in the area of Associated Rd. and Milton Ave., and Blas was a Cal State Fullerton student who was attending a function at an unaffiliated fraternity.”
Fullerton Police Sgt. Ryan O’Neil said officers were called to St. Jude Medical Center after the 18-year-old was dropped off at the emergency department. Detectives then began a death investigation.
“Despite life-saving measures, the male was pronounced deceased by medical staff. Fullerton police detectives responded to the location and began their death investigation.”
Family raises questions after recent fraternity acceptance
Blas’ father said his son had been pledging an off-campus fraternity and had recently been accepted. He said Blas was invited to the fraternity house that night for a celebration.
